I'll be honest, when I first started out as a wedding photographer the dancefloor felt intimidating. But now I've done a complete 180 and the things that used to make me nervous: the light, the unpredictability, the loss of control; are the reason I love it so much. My wedding party photography has been compared to gig photography, music photography, even rave photography and I'm not mad at that at all.

"the unfettered joy of raving" - Matthew Smith | rave photographer
I get right in with the action, use a wide lens so that I can be close up and still capture the whole scene. By this point of the wedding day, the crowd are already used to me and my camera and loosened up a bit! - this plus a drink or two equals a new found love of the lens and I lean right into it.

My Wedding Photography Editing Style
My Approach to Wedding Party Photography
I use direct flash in the majority of situations and this gives this nostalgic high contrast vibe, freezes the frame and allows me to control the light on the subject.
Top tip for couples planning their wedding: if your venue gives you a choice of lighting colours or types, avoid colours and go for all white if you can. Say no to the lasers! They can damage cameras and will affect my movement around the dancefloor as I avoid them.
You'll see the newlyweds close by in most of these examples, because I always say to my couples - if you're not on the dancefloor, your guests won't be either! This is one of my biggest tips for couples: the dancefloor energy at your wedding reception starts with you. Lead by example and your guests will follow.
Getting Your Guests on the Dancefloor
Scroll for more examples of my wedding party shots. My editing style desaturates the colours and mattes the blacks slightly for a film-like emulsion effect that's both flattering and chic. This documentary-style approach to dancefloor photography means you get authentic moments with an editorial edge.
The combination of direct flash photography, close-up candid shots, and my signature editing creates wedding party photos that feel energetic, nostalgic, and real - exactly how the night felt.
